November 2025
Assessment is today's means of modifying tomorrow's instruction.
-Carol Ann Tomlinson
As the year comes to an end in a couple of months, I have been reflecting on 2025. Granted, the year isn’t over yet; we still have 2 more months. The certificates of completion for Activism@Work was just mailed out yesterday, we will be having our first meeting for revi-zine in early November, our board will meet in a couple of weeks for our bi-annual meeting, and we are actively seeking more board members and a new facilitator for the college group. We still have some work left in our fiscal year.
Nevertheless, I like to pause and see how we can grow more effectively and impact more fully. Should we grow our sections, do we need a separate college program, is our money well spent on the internship and should we continue it, and how we do recruit more board members? It comes down to “how are our resources best used given our audience or potential audience?” I don’t know the answer to all these questions. I really don’t which is probably the reason why I rely on our committed, volunteer-board. We need more voices, more perspectives, more resources to guide us into the future.
All this reflection comes naturally to me now. After years of running an organization on extremely limited budget, I’ve learned to constantly scale back according to our resources. I couldn’t imagine or begin to know what it would be like to manage with unlimited resources or a more friendly budget. I hope to come into such times sooner rather than later.
Personally, it has been an uphill struggle with health challenges and tremendous loss but at Platform, we’ve had a solid year. Yes, we’ve had some difficulties with maintaining board members, but we were able to hold a successful workshop, mentor key students for leadership roles, recruit a new, fantastic board member in Dil, and start a new project, revi-zine. Now, we need to reconfigure how we can do better; be more effective in our outreach and mentorship.
